In the sports drama movie genre, the Rocky series is considered a classic. All six movies in the series revolve around the main character, boxer Rocky Balboa, portrayed on screen by Sylvester Stallone. Someone somewhere said that “Rocky is America’s dream”. Elements of positive thinking, resilience, mental toughness, and facing your fears appear throughout the Rocky franchise, and we are sure Rocky Balboa inspires many people around the world. Here are 10 things you can learn from Rocky Balboa. Spoilers for the Rocky movies follow, so if you haven’t seen them, make sure you watch them and then come back here.
It is okay to lose. It is not okay to be mediocre.
In his first fight against world heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, Rocky didn’t win, but he went the distance, the full 15 rounds. He may have lost by a narrow margin, but he made Apollo work to win that match. There is something important to be learned from Rocky here. To always give your best to whatever it is you do or practice. Winning is important, but giving your all is more important.
Train seriously for every fight. Do not underestimate your opponents
In Rocky III, the then-reigning world heavyweight champion Rocky does not take the young challenger Clubber Lang that seriously. While Lang trains alone rigorously, Rocky once trains in the midst of a crowd, which takes away his focus. When the two meet in the fight, Clubber Lang knocks Rocky out in 2 rounds. Although Rocky was pretty much shaken from Mickey's cardiac arrest before the fight, his casual training was also the reason why he lost the match and the championship title.
Always keep your loved ones close. Care for them no matter what.
Rocky is able to survive whatever life (and the ring) throws at him, not just because he is inherently tough. His wife, Adrian, is his emotional centre, while his brother-in-law Paulie is a close friend. His trainer and mentor, Micky Goldmill, plays a huge role in making Rocky a world champion boxer. In Rocky II, when Adrian goes into a coma after delivering their child, Rocky is not able to focus on his training for the upcoming fight with Apollo Creed. Only when she regains consciousness and they see their newborn together does Rocky feel the mental load lift off, which helps him give his 100% to his training. The lesson here is that if you keep your loved ones close, their moral support will help you a lot, especially in times of crisis. Both Adrian and Paulie stay with Rocky for the rest of their lives. Rocky names his restaurant “Adrian” and keeps visiting her grave
Time beats everyone
You cannot remain invincible forever. Be aware of the fact that someone younger and faster will come someday and beat you. You are not going to be young forever. Time will take your youth and strength away from you. Time defeats everyone. Rocky knows this and shares this wisdom with a certain boxer who comes over to ask Rocky to be his mentor. One has to stay humble and grounded, whichever field they may choose to be in. Don’t let success get to your head.
Genuinely respect your opponents and never badmouth anyone
After their first fight, Apollo Creed instigates Rocky for a second fight. He tries some tactics to get an unwilling Rocky Balboa to fight him. During the press conference, when a journalist asks Rocky if he had something derogatory to say to Creed, he says, “No, he’s great.” During the course of their rivalry, friendship develops between the two men.
Clubber Lang didn’t respect Apollo Creed and called him a “has-been”. If he had not disrespected Apollo, if he had not tried to push him to lure him into a brawl, Apollo might not have reached out to Rocky to train him. He and his team trained Rocky to be more agile in the ring, to move a whole lot faster than he used to. Their expertise helped Rocky add vital fast movements to his boxing style, although he combined both punishment taking and fast movement to surprise Clubber Lang. Thus, by behaving disrespectfully towards former world heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, Lang sealed his own fate.
Bring the “eye of the tiger” to the fight
You have to be hungry and desperate to win. You cannot have a sloppy attitude in the ring, even when you have been a winner. In a competition amongst people who are talented and have worked hard, the winner is the one who is also the hungriest for the coveted title/position. He will be so desperate for success that it gives him an edge over the opponents.
